Did you know that over 41,000 (56.29%) children in Guilford County are at risk of going hungry each week?
Did you also know that only $5 can feed a hungry child for the weekend?
BackPack Beginnings' Food BackPack Program is a weekly feeding program established to directly impact childhood hunger in Guilford County by sending school children home with backpacks full of nutritious, kid-friendly food over the weekends during the school year. Utilizing Feeding America’s national BackPack Program, BackPack Beginnings' has grown from one school feeding 50 children in January 2010 to 20 schools and 976 children in the fall of 2013. While we are thrilled to reach this many students, we are only meeting 2% of the possible need in our community. Our program goal is to expand to all 60 Guilford County Title 1 schools and 13 Head Start programs. We are a 100% volunteer program and rely on the generosity of donors to allow us to operate.
BackPack Beginnings works in partnership with Guilford County Title 1 schools and Head Start agencies to identify children currently on free or reduced price meals who are in need of receiving our weekly bags of food. We also partner with Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC to purchase food for the weekly food program, which is distributed in 4 set rotating menu options.
In addition to purchasing food from Second Harvest Food Bank, BackPack Beginnings also holds food drives to collect supplemental food and supplies for our weekly food backpacks. While food is our main focus, we also send the children home with other supplies they might need such as books, hats and gloves, character education, toothbrushes and toothpaste and school supplies. These food and supply drives also benefit Welborn Middle School's food pantry and Guilford Middle School's food pantry, both started by BackPack Beginnings.
